There are numerous advantages to custom designing your own foam furniture.

1. By layering or laminating different firmnesses of foam you’ll be creating a level of comfort and support far superior to that of other sofa beds on the market.
2. Use high density foam and you’ll greatly increase the longevity of your product.
3. You’ll now be able to easily bend your sofa bed up and down stairs , and into hard to reach attics and basements.
4. Customize the length and depth of your sofa bed to fit your space.
5. Lower seating creates a more casual atmosphere , and is usually designed with a deeper , more slanted depth of seating , in conjunction with an increased angle in the back support.
6. Higher seating tends to be more formal , and more upright.

These simple flipout designs are light and easy to move , and can be made to any length , height , or depth , depending on your space, mood, or budget. Since they are normally placed against a hard wall it is best to accessorize them with chipped foam pillows.

The double flipout shown above has a single cloth hinge , while a triple flipout comes with two cloth hinges , and is normally 15”high and flips to a 5”mattress and lounging area.

In this highly efficient design the back support actually becomes part of the mattress when flipped out. It does not require a wall for support , and can be used free standing as a chair or a sofa.

It can also be used in combination with other convertibles to create larger mattresses. For example two 30”X33”DEEP convertible chairs can be flipped out and joined to create a 60”X78”X7”queen size mattress.

Convertible chairs in conjunction with a corner chair design can be grouped to form a corner or U- sectional , and even a large lounging environment when flipped out. Check out the DESIGNER GUYS VIDEO on our DESIGNING WITH FOAM page for further examples.

The tuxedo style of frame shown in previous two photos can be adjusted to different widths. For instance the longer the back of the sofa stretches , the thicker it should be. At the same time a sofa that sits right against the wall could be designed with a 4”back tapering to only 2”at the top in order to economize on space.

The beauty of this style of frame is that it allows you to sit in the corner with excellent back support. One or two of the arms can even be designed to the same height as the back. It goes without saying that you may then also have to increase the width of any such arm.

A sofa or sofa bed with padded arms will allow you to stretch out and rest your head right on the arm. It will also increase its usable length in case you need some more room for your feet. These soft arms will also allow you to sit on the arm , especially as you increase their width.

In certain situations it might even make sense to stretch the arm a little wider and change it into a built in end table. You might wish to design this end table to fit a particular space , with 4”padded sides and a granite , onyx , or marble insert.

So you see there are practically no limitations when you’re designing with foam . Give it a whirl. You never know what you’ll discover.
